Investors can make money from stocks through dividend payments and price appreciation. A dividend is the sum of money paid to shareholders by a company out of its profits. Price appreciation is when the current price of a stock is higher than the price an investor bought it. If an investor chooses to sell the stock at the current price, the difference in price becomes profit.
